Stone circle

Avebury, England
Today we drove down to Avery where the largest stone henge in Europe is located. It's 14 times larger than Stonehenge and 500 years older. the Avebury henge is dated to be 5,000 years old!!! Biblically, we figured it may be a little before the time of Abraham.

Uncle David showed us around as we viewed the massive man-made hill, ditches and stone circle and paths. What is amazing is how and why they got these stones here as they are not native to this area. There is a ceremonial walkway which leads to the center of the stone circle. Over time the a village has formed within the the circle. Some farmers who didn't know or understand what they were moved some of the stones. Many stones are still left. More info http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/

Today was freezing--it felt like Wisconsin!! We had a great time exploring and walking to some of the other historic sites that were close by. They had a barn that was 300 hundreds years old(older than the US!!!) that has old artifacts and tools that would have been used to dig the ditch and banks.

ethan thought this one looked like a face...we agreed!

Charlie's project got extended a few more weeks, so we still enjoying sightseeing on his rare free moments.

Then we drove up the road a little to to walk a long path up to a burial site where they used to bury their dead. The part we looked at was excavated a long time ago. But there are still large parts that have not been touched. It was really special to be there. What a chance to see history. What was it like back then? What were the people like? Why did they build it?

Anyways, very fun day.

What fun pictures. I just got back on today, because I must confess to misplacing and losing your new blog address. Now I have in my favorites, so that won't happen again.
Looks like you're continuing to enjoy your stay in England to the max. What a wonderful thing!!!
You're missed back here though - =) How was your holiday season? We're getting back in the groove this week as Steve was off for two whole weeks. Now we have the FORT retreat starting tomorrow - so we had to hit the ground running! =)
Love to you all.
